Business-Justifying 3G Networks with 2G Technologies

While climbing SMS revenues have rescued U.S. wireless operators from a precarious business position, the real value of this 2G technology offering is its ability to help these providers justify spending on 3G wireless network infrastructure. Whereas foreign operators, like SK Telecom of South Korea, already have deployed 3G multimedia offerings to their masses, the U.S. is playing catch up in the global market. It's a game they can play only if SMS is on the team. Driven by a new generation of young wireless customers who grew up on PC-based instant messaging and e-mail, wireless carriers literally have sat back and watched their declining voice revenues saved by SMS usage.
