Celebrating 75 years of the Telecommunications Journal of Australia: Reflecting 75 years of innovation and change in the Australian telecommunications industry

In 1935, when this Journal was launched, improving wool and meat prices overseas were startingnto pull Australia out of its Great Depression, but unemployment still exceeded 20%. There wasnno Keynesian (or Obama/Ruddite) stimulus spending practised here in that era: no Australiannversion of Roosevelt's contemporary New Deal to build important national infrastructure, despitenthe evident value of earlier make-work schemes for ex-servicemen, such as building the GreatnOcean Road in Victoria after World War I. There was no national telecommunications projectnplanned in the 1930s comparable to the 1870-72 Overland Telegraph Line, the 1960–62 Mel-nbourne-Sydney coaxial cable or the 2010+ National Broadband Network.
