Operators, users network resilience issues

Concern that other operators may experience outages similar to a recent network failure at WorldCom (see box) is leading to calls for "resilience audits" to be carried out by third parties for all major carriers. Businesses are also looking into how reliable the provision of telecommunications services to their organisation is. Resilience audits are designed to ensure that networks are robust enough to provide continual services whatever the circumstances. At the moment operators do check the resilience of their networks but are hampered in developing a full picture through lack of information about rival operators' networks and routing patterns.
