Belgian carriers balk at plans for universal service fund

Around 17 alternative fixed carriers and mobile operators in Belgium have joined forces to oppose the activation of a universal service fund,'and the implementation of social tariffs for Mobile services under a draft telecommunications law. The draft could reach the statute books by July. Mobistar, MCI, Versatel, BT, Cable & Wireless, Tele2 and Telenet are the core players in an operator group opposed to the fund, known as Platform. The proposal for the fund forms part of draft telecommunications legislation that transposes the EU's communications package into Belgian law.
