Although interest in TV over DSL is increasing in Europe -deployments have recently taken place in countries including France, Spain and Slovenia and activity is expected in most European markets this year - several factors need to come together if the technology is to take off on a wide scale. Among the concerns are whether set-top boxes can be deployed quickly, with some suggesting that this has led to a small number of operators developing or considering developing the boxes themselves. Gary Stephenson, product manager of digital broadband media at UK set-top-box manufacturer Pace, says that though a few operators are trying to make their own set-top boxes for trials and may be considering deploying them commercially, for wide-scale projects they are like- ly to use Pace and other current set-top-box manufacturers to limit the cost. Stephenson says Pace is confident it can deliver enough boxes if they are needed.
