European incumbent DSL share falls ever closer to 50%

Incumbents in 10 of Europe's major markets saw their combined share of the retail DSL market drop towards the 50% mark in the year to end-2Q05, with unbundling, falling prices and an increasing array of rival offers helping to erode their dominance. The incumbents' market share fell by seven percentage points, from 64% to 57%. When wholesale is included, their market share dropped from 89% to 83%. Meanwhile, the number of unbundled lines in the 10 countries more than doubled, from 2.5 million to 6.1 million (see fig.).
