Recent data on telecoms competition in France supports the regulator's move to begin deregulating the country's retail fixed-telephony markets. The incumbent, France Telecom, is rapidly losing traditional fixed-line customers, while take-up of alternative VoIP offers from rivals Free and Neuf Cegetel has accelerated in the first half of this year (see fig.)
