Growing use of so-called Web 2.0 services is putting telecoms providers in a quandary over whether to boost their broadband upload speeds. YouTube, Flickr and legitimate peer-to-peer applications such as the BBC's iPlayer place greater emphasis on users uploading content onto the Internet than conventional Internet services, which largely centre on downloading. The problem for broadband providers is to find out how they can make extra money from this trend by upgrading their networks, or whether such investment can be repaid at all.
