High-speed, low-priced Ethernet services are driving broadband take-up in Romania, but many providers could go out of business if NetCity gets under way. Broadband household penetration in Romania is among the highest in Central and Eastern Europe at more than 32.9%, after doubling in the year to end-2Q08. The majority of subscribers are connected via fiber-to-the-building with Ethernet UTP/FTP connections in the home, making it normal for customers in cities and larger towns to have access to broadband at speeds of up to 100Mbps or 50Mbps.
