UK alternative operator Orange has launched a "free" 2Mbps broadband offer for new subscribers signing up to a mobile contract costing at least ￡30 (E∪D36.80) a month. A new housing development in the Northern Irish capital, Belfast, is set to get fibre-to-the-home. Network operator Redstone has been awarded the contract to deploy the open-access fibre network to the Titanic Quarter project, which will contain 7,500 apartments. UK public broadcaster the BBC has introduced a high-quality H.264 version of its iPlayer streaming-video service. The high-quality stream will consume 800Kbps compared with the low-quality 500Kbps stream, adding to some ISPs' worries that the service will overload their networks.
