Several of the UK's development agencies are investigating novel models to make sure their areas are at the front of the queue for next-generation broadband.rnThe market-driven nature of the rollout of the first generation of broadband meant that many of the rural or poorer areas the public-sector agencies represent were among the last to get access.rnThe agencies plan to use various types of public-sector intervention to guarantee that these homes get next-generation broadband first, or at least at the same time as areas more popular with commercial operators.rnSome agency executives even argue that the rollout of next-generation-access (NGA) networks in the UK should be driven by local needs, rather than the agendas of the national companies that have dominated the debate so far.
