A division value processor (6) separates the adder (5) output value (i, f) into an integer value (i) and a fraction (f). The feedback path (7, 14) returns the fractional component (f), or the fractional part (f h) as modified by a processor (8), to the adder (5) for addition. The adder adds the returned fractional component (f) to a division value (x) present. The frequency division unit (1) is controlled on the basis of the integer component (i). An independent claim is included for the method of operation.
