Ethernet goes international with HGC-KT VPLS link

Ethernet's reach became a lot wider last month with the establishment of what is apparently the world's first inter-autonomous international Ethernet network launched by Hong Kong's Hutchison Global Communications and South Korea's KT Corp. The two telcos, which see the service as a stepping stone to broadening their international reach, have essentially interconnected their respective metro Ethernet infrastructure to create a Layer 2 multipoint-to-multipoint network utilizing VPLS (virtual private LAN service), an emerging alternative technology to IP-VPNs. Both run on IP/MPLS networks, but VPLS is designed to integrate more seamlessly with carrier and customer networks. It's also simpler to provision, and scales well.
