NEW MEMBERS NAMED TO SENATE COMMERCE COMMITTEE

Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced committee assignments in the 110th Congress, confirming as expected that Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) will head the Commerce Committee. The committee gains 3 new members: Sens.-elect Amy Klobuchar (D- Minn.) and Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) and Sen. Tom Carper (D- Del.); Sen. Ben Nelson (Neb.) moves to the Appropriations Committee. The Democrats now will have 12 members, 2 more than during their days in the minority. The Republicans lost Sens. George Allen (Va.) and Conrad Burns (Mont.), defeated in races for reelection. nnAs expected, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) was named chmn.-to-be of the Judiciary Committee, which also gained 2 new members: Sens.-elect Ben Cardin (Md.) and Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.). Neither Cardin nor Whitehouse listed telecom issues on their campaign platforms. Reid said Tues. he would meet with Senate Republicans to finalize each committee. Leadership appointments also were announced: Reid will become Majority Leader; Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) will be Majority Whip.
