HOUSE HEARING TO TAKE UP ANTISPOOFING MEASURE

The House Judiciary Crime Subcommittee plans a hearing Wed. on caller ID legislation (HR-5304) that would outlaw deceiving people about a phone call抯 source. Sponsored by Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Pa.), the bill is expected to have bipartisan support. It抯 similar to one (HR-5126) the House passed in June, and at the end of June the Senate unanimously passed an anti-spoofing amendment in the telecom bill (HR-5252). Sens. Olympia Snowe (R-Me.) and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) sponsored an antispoofing bill that mandated fines. The Barton bill imposes no fines and includes a provision that would enable legitimate businesses to operate.
