DoJ cleared Verizon Wireless's acquisition of Alltel, on the condition that the carrier makes promised divestitures. The department said Verizon must sell assets in 100 places in 22 states. Verizon Wireless disclosed many terms after agreeing to them after the purchase was announced in June. DoJ's Antitrust Division called the divestitures the most extensive the department has required in a wireless merger and "necessary to protect wireless customers." The FCC is to vote on the merger Tuesday. To be determined is whether the FCC imposes more roaming conditions or open access conditions on Verizon in a merger order. A number of small carriers and their trade groups have asked the FCC to delay approval of the $28.1 billion deal.
