BAD ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS IN NEW YORK FIOS HAVE VERIZON CHECKING

Verizon is inspecting electrical connections in all its New York FiOS installations, after state regulators found that a substantial number may be badly bonded and grounded. The company acted after routine Public Service Commission review found FiOS installations out of compliance with National Electrical Code bonding and grounding standards, posing hazards. The commission wants comments by Sept. 22 on a Verizon proposal that it reinspect all its FiOS installations within 60 days and correct problems. The proposal calls for quality-control procedures to ensure that FiOS electrical connections are done correctly. A Verizon spokesman said the company isn't waiting for approval of the inspection plan and already is checking FiOS connections. No fires or electric-related public dangers from FiOS installations have been reported, he said. The company is working with the commission to make sure it's comfortable with Verizon's installation practices and that the Bell knows the PSC's expectations, h said. There's no estimate yet of what the inspections will cost, he said.
