TECH ELIGIBLE FOR STIMULUS BILLIONS BEYOND BROADBAND PROGRAMS

Information and communications technology companies are missing big opportunities if theynlook only to the NTIA and the RUS broadband programs for stimulus money, speakers said atna Vienna, Va., event organized by TIA and the Northern Virginia Technology Council. Theynsaid billions of dollars are available elsewhere under the stimulus law for the technologies. ICTnmoney is "hidden all over" in the stimulus package, said Karen Jackson, Virginia's deputynsecretary of technology. She said money is available in education, public safety interoperability,nhealth IT, smart grid, transportation and energy, among others. Educational technology isnexpected to get $650 million in stimulus, said Kevin Plexico, senior vice president for researchnand analysis at Input, which does government-contracting research. Health IT is likely to benone of the big growth areas, said Ray Sullivan, who recently retired as Veterans Affairs' chiefninformation officer.
