The cable industry will offer discounted broadband service to some low-income households forntwo years if the federal government subsidizes purchases of PCs for them along withndigital-literacy education by school districts, said CEO Kyle McSlarrow of the NCTA. Thenassociation proposes a two-year pilot program called Adoption Plus ? A+ for short -- for thenestimated 1.8 million households with children in grades 6-9 who qualify for the NationalnSchool Lunch Program. The proposal builds on Cox's experience with the school district innSanta Barbara, Calif., McSlarrow said. Funding may be available through the broadbandnstimulus program, he said. Otherwise, the FCC could recommend that Congress authorizennew money, McSlarrow said. If the agree NTIA agrees to provide stimulus money, the programncould be running by fall 2010, he said.
