SPRINT SAYS EXODUS OF SUBSCRIBERS HAS LEVELED OFF

Sprint Nextel narrowed its net loss in Q4 to $1.6 billion from $29.3 billion a year earlier. The carrier lost 1.3 million net customers but suggested the numbers were stabilizing. The subscriber loss was equal to the one Q3, and customers are responding well to Sprint's new phone offerings and flat-rate calling plans, CEO Dan Hesse said. The company is in a good position to weather the economic storm though its subscriber losses and revenue declines are still "unacceptably high," Hesse said. He said he still believes that the wireless industry is relatively well positioned in a weak economy. The company maintained a strong financial position and will continue to generate free cash flow in 2009, said Chief Financial Officer Bob Brust.
