WIRELESS CARRIERS TEST SYSTEM FOR REPORTING MOBILE SPAM

Mobile operators are doing a trial of a spam-reporting service to deal with mobile-messaging abuse, the GSM Association said.nThe service, which provides a global clearinghouse of messaging threats and misuse reported by users, is being tested bynAT&T Mobility, Korea Telecom and French operator SFR, the association said. It said the technology analyzes SMS traffic andnidentifies and collects reports using a short code -- which can be "7726," whose numerals are the equivalent of the letters inn"spam" where local numbering systems permit -- together with the universally recognized code "33700," to encouragenconsumers to report SMS spam. Users can direct spam messages to a feedback system that notifies their service providers sonthey can investigate, warn or block the senders, the association said. Each participating operator will receive correlated reportsnwith data on patterns, volumes and top spam originators inside and outside its network, it said.
