Pro-business groups applauded a bill by Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., of the Senate nJudiciary Committee to revamp the Electronic Communications Privacy Act. It “focuses on nthe one clear harm that seems to underlie most online privacy concerns: law enforcement’s naccess to personal data without judicial scrutiny,” TechFreedom said. “Addressing that very nreal problem should unite everyone who cares about privacy.” The changes called for would nbe an important step in “updating antiquated protections for consumers utilizing modern-day ncloud and mobile services,” Americans for Tax Reform said. The bill would benefit providers nof communications services, the Competitive Enterprise Institute said. “The reforms would nalso reduce the incentive for cloud computing firms to locate their servers abroad, beyond the nreach of U.S. law enforcement.”
