The FCC is “at a turning point” in its mobile broadband testing program, and is looking to scale upnthe number of participants testing its smartphone app, officials told the measurement working groupnThursday. The commission’s goal is to get more diversity of handsets and locales. Carrier testing hasnproven the stability of the app, said CEO Alex Salter of SamKnows, which the agency has contracted withnto conduct the tests. The next phase will be a 2-3 week period of testing by carrier employees, he said.nThe data collected during this phase will not be used for reporting speed measurements, but only for planningnand development of the program toward its official launch. FCC Geographic Information OfficernMichael Byrne gave a presentation on how to properly present the mobile data. “We want to create andnpublish things that are easily consumable,” he said, using browser-based interactive utilities. Anyonenshould be able to interact with the data simply and with no barriers to access, he said: The plan is to havenan “ecology” around this data, which will be shared on GitHub, a Web-based hosting service for softwarendevelopment.
