isual literacy, it can be posited,nis an important foundation innteaching young people to communicatenand create using visual motionnmedia, photography, and technology.nIn 1987, Paul Messaris of the AnnenbergnSchool of Communication at thenUniversity of Pennsylvania, defined thenterm visual literacy as “the notion thatnthe interpretation of film or television—nmore precisely, of the formal structurenof a movie or TV program—dependsnon prior familiarity with a set of formaln(media production) conventions.”nIn our curriculum, Marilyn and Inembedded the study of media productionnconventions as two sets of criteria:nLiterary Criteria and Production ConventionnCriteria.
