Open-ended projects: 21st century learning in engineering education

摘要

In many school systems, students are encouraged to take an engineering or technology education course prior to graduation. As the demands of the global economy become increasingly more rigorous, it is imperative that all students leave the secondary level with a solid foundation in 21st century skills (Wang 2013). While many students plan to enter postsecondary studies or industry in fields that are not STEM-related, a quality education in these STEM courses will provide them with the skill set necessary to be successful. A solid foundation in the engineering classroom begins with carefully crafted projects that lead students to acquiring skills in collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and time management. Through the implementation of open-ended projects, students learn these skills while working through the project, thus preparing them to be successful in any industry or collegiate program. Additionally, effective utilization of open-ended projects naturally engages students and thus can increase the number of students who become interested in STEM fields. While it is hoped that more students will move towards these STEM professions, the use of open-ended projects can and will prepare them to successfully make contributions in any field with their acquired 21st century skills.
