Ships' Fastenings: From Sewn Boat to Steamship

Michael McCarthy serves as curator of the Department of Maritime Archae ology at the Western Australian Maritime Museum. His book focuses "on those fastenings that appear in, or on, a hull serving to secure it in service" (p. 9), and it is a worthy addition to the library of any boat or ship enthusi ast. McCarthy documents what he considers to be the "central element in boat and shipbuilding traditions over place and time" (p. 3). The book's time-frame begins in ancient Egypt, when reed boats were still lashed together, and carries through to the twentieth century and the employment of welding.
