摘要

In early modern Europe, three-dimensional models of the body were produced in a number of cultural contexts-religious, medical, and popular. Models were made by a wide range of practitioners using many different materials and techniques and for a variety of purposes. Anatomists used models to visualize bodily details for students and colleagues; midwives produced dummies for hands-on training; artists made models to study the actions of muscles or to show gruesome reminders of human mortality. This multiplicity of functions left anatomical models open to challenges when model-makers tried to establish models as medical technologies, as tools to be used specifically in medical training or education.
