In the treatment of chronic wounds, nursing staff have to change a dressing regularly—not just for reasons of hygiene, but also to examine the wound, take swabs and clean it. This not only irritates the skin, but can allow bacteria to get in, increasing the risk of infection. It would be preferable to leave the bandage on for longer if nursing staff were able to ascertain the condition of the wound.
