WorldCat Identities (WI) is an experimental data-mining website started in 2007 by OCLC Research that provides summary pages for millions of personal and corporate (both real and fictitious) names from the WorldCat database. These summary pages are visual snapshots of the works and metadata associated with the name. WI also can be useful for comparing similar names or making identification from a partial name. The front page for WI consists of a search box and a tag cloud populated by the most common names found in WorldCat. Clicking on any of the tag cloud names goes directly to the identity page for that name. Each item on the search results list is preceded by an icon that indicates whether the name/identity originates from a controlled vocabulary. The text size of the list items also grows or shrinks, visually representing of the identity's popularity. Some results may also have a role (e.g., illustrator), or a phrase (e.g., children's stories) derived from subject headings or genres associated with the identity. The search results screen includes a legend explaining these cues for easy reference.
