摘要

Inflammation is a process by which a tissue reacts to injury. A tissue may either heal completely or form a fibrotic scar depending on the extent of damage and the type of tissue involved. The injury may be of several types such as surgery, infection, trauma, or radiation. Fibrous bands of scar tissue resembling thin plastic films is sometimes formed between two separate tissues that have a serous membrane covering them and these are termed as adhesions or internal scars. These tissues can potentially restrict tissue movement causing pain due to pulling up of nerves, and can lead to severe clinical complications, such as bowel obstruction, infertility, and chronic abdominal or pelvic pain depending on the site of injury. Except for pain, adhesions are often asymptomatic and are diagnosed only during medical examination post surgery using X-rays or computed tomography (CT) scan. Once diagnosed, the tissues need to be cut open to release the adhesions to prevent further complications. However, there is a huge market demand for a product that when applied on to the injured tissues will prevent adhesions from forming in the first place, to avoid any future complications.
