Globally, scientists are investing significant efforts into making fuels from waste and renewable sources, but Richard Gross adopted an innovative research approach to develop a plastic with high fuel value and properties similar to PE that can be under mild low-tech conditions converted via an enzymatic process back to fatty acids, and subsequently biodiesel. The bioengineered 'fuel-latent plastic' from plant oils can be used as ordinary plastic such as films for food packaging or other purposes, and once it is a waste it can be enzymatically converted into diesel fuel.
