HELEN DEGENHARDT and MAX JACOBSON ("Contemporary Courtyard," pp. 44-49) are partners at JSWD Architects in Berkeley, Calif. Helen was raised and educated in Germany before coming to the United States. She has worked on projects for the San Francisco Zen Center, and she was partner in charge of the Spirit Rock Meditation Center. Max was a co-author of A Pattern Language (Oxford University Press, 1976) and, along with Murray Silverstein and Barbara Winslow, co-wrote The Good House (The Taunton Press, 1990) and Pat- terns of Home (The Taunton Press, 2002). Since 1975, he has taught architecture at Diablo Valley College.
