MORTISE-AND-TENON DECK RAILING

Owner and head designer of Golden Rule Designs, Ryan Baird specializes in all facets of woodworking, from custom furniture to trim and yacht carpentry to timber-framing. He designed and built this one-of-a-kind Mediterranean-style mahogany deck railing. Baird eschewed fasteners for mortise-and-tenon joinery, much of which was cut on-site with hand tools. The balusters attach to the top rail with tenons and to the underside of the bottom rail with wedged through-tenons.
