I have 3/4-in. tongue-and-groove sheathing, 2×4 framing, and 1/2-in. drywall, and I am planning to add an exterior door. If I add it all up, I need a 4 13/16-in. jamb, not a standard 4 9/16-in. jamb. How should I go about putting in the door? Should I use 1/4-in. drywall in the room? Or maybe taper the drywall out to 1/2-in.? Could I cut the sheathing out in the door area and replace it with 1/2-in. plywood? Or do I order a custom door with a 4 13/16-in. jamb depth? I like this idea the most, but does anybody know where I could find one? It seems to me that all you need to do is to add a 1/4-in. layer on the inside, behind the trim, presumably finished the same as the jamb proper. Depending on your preferred look, you can either make it flush with the jamb or have a slight reveal.
