The winners of our editor's choice award (pp. 60-65), SUSAN STOLTZ AND DAVID KAU, are partners at Stoltz Kau Architects on Orcas Island in Washington's San Juan Archipelago and have been working together for over 20 years. Their work balances the demands of the island's unique microclimates and the modern lifestyles of the families who live in their homes. Their own home serves as a laboratory for island-family living, with three kids, a collection of kayaks, and a few too many animals.
