For our annual Kitchens & Baths issue, I'm always on the hunt for projects that offer ideas for conserving resources-whether the savings are financial or ecological. I also value projects that preserve tradition and those that exhibit innovation. In short, I appreciate work with clear purpose, especially when it comes to rooms that serve such intentional roles. It is refreshing to see the no-nonsense approach builder Wayne Hymer takes when remodeling his own kitchen, which he manages to do for just $12,000. In "A Kitchen for the Rest of Us" (pp. 44-47), he shares tips for working in an immovable footprint, beefing up inexpensive cabinets, and keeping it real with box-store materials.
