Cephalometric radiography

In cephalometric radiography a cephalostat is used to obtain standardised and reproducible radiographs of the facial bones and the base of skull. Cephalometry is used extensively in orthodontics, the branch of dentistry concerned with the growth of the face, development of the occlusion and the prevention and correction of occlusal anomalies. It is used to analyse the facial skeleton in the planning and monitoring of orthodontic treatment. The most common projection is the lateral cephalometric radiograph (LCR). The postero-anterior projection (PA) is used occasionally for assessment of facial asymmetries and for pre and post-operative comparison in patients undergoing orthog-nathic surgery on the mandible.
