Scott Reitz's recent article about the Newhall Incident was an eye-opener for me (FRONTLINE DEBRIEFS, September 2017 S.W.A.T.). I have been a defensive firearms instructor since the mid-1990s, and I have no idea how many times I've told students how bad range habits-specifically placing expended cases from a revolver into their pockets and referencing the Newhall Incident-could end up getting them killed. Until I read Mr. Reitz's piece, I had no idea I had been contributing to an urban legend. From this point forward I am determined to perform more due diligence and research on things I have been told, not only for myself, but to make sure I'm not passing on myths to my students.
