Archaeology in the Middle East has long been used by both nationalists and colonialists to validate their respective claims. Napoleon's army in Egypt campaigned with archaeologists in tow, as did the French and British armies in the Levant in the next century. Neo-Orientalists who cherish their David Roberts lithographs of romantic Middle Eastern ruins should thank the British expeditionary force that brought the famous surveyor to Baalbek and other exotic locales.
