Journalist and author Ron Rosenbaum has produced a curious book. It includes far too much unwarranted scaremongering (the title reflects the general tone of the book), but it is also fairly well researched and includes some interesting insights.The first part of the book is devoted to command-and-control issues and the risk of inadvertent war or uncontrolled escalation. Mostly based on interviews with key experts and a few officials, these chapters include some valuable material. A problem is that Rosenbaum tends to take at face value just about any claim that we are on the brink of a nuclear disaster, provided that it supports his thesis. This includes some truly bizarre statements, such as the opinion of an alleged UK government source that 'we came close to world war three' when Israel destroyed a reactor in Syria in 2007 (p. 2).
