Sovereignty: Moral and Historical Perspectives

James Turner Johnson is one of the most learned and productive thinkers and historians on the subject of the just war and, more generally, on the role of morality in international relations. The present short volume addresses the same problems through the concept of sovereignty, offering a concise but rich history of sovereignty's evolution, and of doctrines on the use of force, from Augustine to the recent 'responsibility to protect', via Thomas Aquinas, Francisco de Vitoria and Martin Luther, the Westphalian settlement and the UN Charter, and many other authors, documents and institutions.
