The Limits of Detente: The United States, the Soviet Union and the Arab-Israeli Conflict, 1969-1973

The recent release of documents from the American archives makes the 1973 Arab-Israeli War a subject of increased historical curiosity. Although long overshadowed by the more spectacular Six-Day War with its conquests and occupations, the Yom Kippur War is emerging from the shadows. Indeed, the war had all the elements of a thrilling international crisis: Arab armies, whose daring and skill surprised a complacent Israeli military and intelligence establishment; an embattled American president facing impeachment, who was often too mentally drained to manage the war; and a superpower stand-off that led to a nuclear alert.
