Ruskola has written an important work on how interpretations of the differences between Chinese and Western legal systems have affected the relationship between the two cultures. It is a must-read not only for students of comparative law, but also for anyone who is interested in the history and current state of Sino-US relations. This breakthrough work effectively debunks the commonly held view in the United States (and the West more generally) that China is a country without the rule of law - and indeed, a 'law breaker in chief' - while the United States serves 'as the world's chief law enforcer as well as leading law exporter' (p. 2).
