Postoperative Parotid Abscess: Another Occult Source of Severe Sepsis

To the Editor: In April, 2007, a 71-year-old male was admitted from the operating room to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Evangelismos General Hospital after an extensive resection for esophageal cancer. He had no other notable medical history, and evaluation was negative for metastasis. Empiric intravenous antibiotic therapy with parenteral ampicillin-sulbactam was initiated immediately upon his admission to the ICU.
