While FedEx is a major express package competitor globally, it has lagged in expanding its 3PL capabilities worldwide. Its contract logistics, freight forwarding and customs brokerage are value-added service businesses whose role is to support FedEx express, package and less-than-truckload transportation. FedEx SCS does not compete on stand-alone value-added warehousing and distribution business. FedEx founder Fred Smith has a long-standing aversion to "low margin" warehousing-based operations. However, FedEx Trade Networks (freight forwarding and customs brokerage) continues to expand its business. It opened five new European offices in late 2010 and has opened 33 globally since 2008. FedEx Trade Networks now has over 100 offices globally.
