The year 2012 is only a few weeks old, but it has already provided us with important lessons for our energy supplies. The most notable piece of news in this context came from France. The "motherland of nuclear power" - with approx. 80 % of its electricity supplies coming from nuclear power stations - had to buy wind and solar power from Germany to prevent its own population from being left in the cold. The trading of electricity across national borders is a perfectly normal procedure to keep up supply security.
