Inspection, repair or replacement of mist elimination equipment in sulphuric acid absorption and drying towers has long been a hazardous undertaking in which personnel must physically enter the tower through a manway. Not only does this require protective clothing and special breathing apparatus, but entry permits for confined spaces, required in many countries, necessitate elaborate precautions before vessel entry is allowed.
