During the award ceremony of the Pritzker Prize, in 1980, the Mexican architect Luis Barragan (1902-88) declared "my architecture is autobiographical." And his is not an isolated case. The work of an artist is like a window into his inner world. His life and his work communicate with each other. It is not a straightforward link, nor a causal one. It is the product of mysterious connections in a constant flow from the present to the past, and often projected into the future. In this movement in time, memory plays the leading role. Our encounter with the world, consciously or not, is guided by our memories of places, people, books, events. And these traces, left by old sensations and by the way in which we relive them, change our relationship with the world, leading us to open up to or close ourselves off from it.
