SEI Introduction: Recent Structures in UK and Ireland

In anticipation of the forthcoming IABSE Symposium in London in September 2011, this special edition of SEI focuses on projects in the UK and Ireland. With the 2012 London Olympics just around the corner, there is no doubt that many of the exciting structures being built for the Games will take centre stage on television screens all over the world in the lead up to August 2012 and during the events themselves. This is a wonderful showcase for the ingenuity and creativity of engineers and demonstrates the vital importance of the engineering professions to the viewing public. The fact that many if not all of these projects involve contributions from different countries, demonstrates the truly international nature of such major construction projects in the UK today.
