Born in 1921, Professor Yung Kee Shin (Fig. 1) lived through a period of historical instability, but by the time he passed away in 1995, he left behind him a truly remarkable legacy as one of Korea's first generation of structural engineers. This tribute is made to look back on how a young talented boy growing up in a ruptured war-torn country became a successful engineer who inspired generations of future Korean engineers. His achievements are still influencing engineers today and his role in establishing Korea's structural engineering in the world has been significant to say the least. The field of structural engineering got under way in Korea only after 36 years of the Japanese Occupation of Korea ended in 1945 and the Korean War, which broke out in 1950. The Korean Society of Civil Engineers (KSCE) was founded after these tumultuous years; so it can be said that structural engineering in Korea has a history of approximately 60 years.
